KAS Monthly to Publish “Judicial Candidate Focus Series” Profiling Judicial Candidates Statewide

May 2, 2018

The publishers of Kentucky Appellate Survey Monthly are pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of a Judicial Candidate Focus Series. The first-of-its-kind series will profile and interview judicial candidates from throughout the Commonwealth. All candidates running in contested races on the May 22, 2018, ballot have been invited to participate. A separate series focused on general election candidates will be published in October of this year.

“We are pleased to launch this exciting series that will profile candidates for judicial office throughout the Commonwealth,” said Managing Editor Edward M. O’Brien and Executive Editor Nicholas E. Whitt. “It is vitally important not only for members of the bar, but for all Kentuckians, to learn as much as they can about the background, qualifications, and values of candidates for the bench. We are honored that dozens of candidates from all across Kentucky at all levels, from the Supreme Court on down, have agreed to participate. And we are especially proud to offer this service to the public free of charge. We hope this project will ensure that Kentuckians make educated decisions when they go into the voting booth.”

The Judicial Candidate Focus Series will be published the week of May 7, 2018, and will be accessible to the public on kentuckyappellatesurvey.com, where users will be able to browse all races or quickly locate profiles for a particular race or candidate. Each candidate has been asked to submit a written statement of no more than 750 words providing background information, why they are seeking election, and what makes them the best choice for the job. Candidates have also been asked to answer a set of written questions designed to highlight their experience, values, and temperament. The entire series will also be compiled into a special e-book issue of KAS Monthly which will be distributed to all subscribers and available for download, free of charge, on kentuckyappellatesurvey.com. Kentucky Appellate Survey Monthly will make no candidate endorsements.

The upcoming series will feature profiles of and interviews with candidates running in the following contested races on May 22, 2018:

Kentucky Appellate Survey and Kentucky Appellate Survey Monthly cover each and every one of the nearly 1,400 opinions and orders, published and unpublished, released by the Kentucky Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Kentucky each year.

The annual edition of Kentucky Appellate Survey covers each and every appellate court decision from the Kentucky Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Kentucky. Launched in 2014, Kentucky Appellate Survey not only summarizes and analyzes, but contextualizes, the opinions and orders issued by Kentucky’s appellate courts in each year. The first four annual editions of the publication covered more than 5,600 opinions.

KAS Monthly provides timely coverage of appellate court decisions and is typically published within the first full week of each month. The publication also covers news and major developments in Kentucky's legal community and features interviews with and profiles of Kentucky's judges as part of the recently launched "Judicial Focus" series. Additionally, as a public service, KAS Monthly is distributed to each and every judge in the Commonwealth, making it a must-read for all Kentucky attorneys. Since launching in February 2015, KAS Monthly has covered more than 4,000 judicial opinions.

Both products, created by O’Brien Whitt Publishing, LLC, offer readers the comprehensiveness, depth, and context that any good legal resource should. Kentucky Appellate Survey and KAS Monthly are the only resources currently available to the bench and bar that not only comprehensively survey the appellate landscape, but also contextualize the frequent changes in that landscape. The publications are a vital starting point for any legal researcher in Kentucky and an indispensable and cost-effective resource for Kentucky's legal community.
